Racked with pain: Bike parking on Walworth Rd
I was pleased to see this new bike parking this morning on Liverpool Grove, just off south London's famous Walworth Road. Charlie Chaplin hailed from round here, so it's appropriate that I don't get the joke here either.
The three racks, evidently installed by someone under the impression they were for very large slices of toast, provide between them enough parking for two whole bikes: one each on the outsides of the system.
In fact, make that four bikes, if you could somehow contrive to squeeze a couple of them into the spaces in between. The task would present few problems to those practised in making knockabout silent comedies.

It's traditional for bike racks to be installed by someone who's never actually seen a bike but has read about them. That's also how they design most bike lanes...
ReplyDeleteOh dear!
ReplyDeleteThose are Bike Rack Shaped Objects, which are best suited to Bike Shaped Objects from large discount department stores.
ReplyDeleteOh dear, is this sort of thing worth reporting and getting fixed, or do you think it's unlikely to help?
ReplyDeleteIt is worth reporting - these things often come down to an error on the part of the contractor. Doesn't excuse the council for not checking that work is of an acceptable standard, but they are generally willing to chase up errors that cost them nothing to fix.
ReplyDeleteEasy enough to fix - just remove the central one and double the available space!
