Quirky London 18 of 20: DIY Skyride
Where is it? Constitution Hill and The Mall, by Buckingham Palace.
What's quirky about it? Every Sunday, these two grand thoroughfares are closed to traffic. So, if you enjoyed the London Skyride last year, you can recreate it without the 65,000 pesky people on bikes getting in your way, or the marshals telling you not to do whatever you're doing.
Why bike there? Swan up and down unmolested by traffic to Buckingham Palace, St James's Park, Wellington Arch, and (most of the way) to Admiralty Arch, Trafalgar Square, Houses of Parliament, etc etc...

Why don't London cyclists make more of this? It wouldn't be too hard to organise a regular fun get together and if you add in Hyde Park it's a nice little circuit. Dress up, bring a few drinks, make a regular party of it...much more fun than the corporate nonsense.
ReplyDeleteI suspect if you have a lot of cyclists there they will ban bikes. I got told to get off my bike in the Mall on a Sunday 20 years ago.
ReplyDeleteTried this out today, but the Mall was closed off for some running event, as was the bike lane, must happen a lot as there was a specially made sign saying it was closed.
ReplyDeleteWouldn't it be great if traffic was banned from Horse guards too and either Bird cage walk or the south carriage drive in Hyde Park to make a nice circuit..
